Bai Tu Long - Ha Long are like twin bays in the Northeast island region. While
Ha Long Bay has service and tourism activities that reach 15 million visitors
per year, Bai Tu Long Bay is still dull, with many landscapes without human
footprints. Currently, the Party and the State are encouraging the development
of sea and island tourism, but here it is like "the upper door is open - the
lower door is still locked".
Bai Tu Long includes islands with a total area of 61.25 km2 and an aquatic
marine area of 96.58 km2; with over 630 islands, 23 of which are inhabited
(not including Cam Pha city). Of which, Van Don has 600 islands, 20 of which are
inhabited; Co To has 30 islands, 3 of which are inhabited. The hydrological area
is defined according to administrative boundaries; but in reality, the
boundaries of Lan Ha Bay, Ha Long Bay, Bai
Tu Long Bay have not been marked... The bays along the mainland, belonging
to the Gulf of Tonkin in the Northeast sea area have quite similar tidal
amplitudes, aquatic life, geomorphology, and vegetation. When the Mining Area
was taken over (April 25, 1955), the waters of Ha Long Bay still had 3 inhabited
islands and they were lost during urbanization, now only Tuan Chau Island
remains.
Bai Tu Long Bay has cultural sediments, spiritual tourism and eco-tourism
values; in which Soi Nhu culture is the cradle of prehistoric Vietnamese people
dating back about 25,000 years ago, equivalent to Hoa Binh culture; Vo Nhai
culture (Thai Nguyen). Historically, with the classic naval battle of Van Don in
1288, Nhan Hue Vuong Tran Khanh Du commanded the Tran Dynasty army and people to
defeat the Yuan - Mongol army's food ships led by enemy general Truong Van Ho,
when invading our country for the third time. Van Don still has many outpost
relics of feudal dynasties such as the fortress and the ancient citadel of the
Mac Dynasty on Ngoc Vung Island.
Van Don commercial port was a bustling trading port during the three feudal
dynasties of Ly, Tran, Le with 7 glorious centuries. A living treasure of
Vietnamese seaport history. Accordingly, cultural and spiritual works were
built; especially the central area of Van Don commercial port such as: Cong
Tay Island with 5 pagodas, 100-room Lam pagoda, 14-storey tower... a treasure of
tangible and intangible culture, a major religious center in the Northeast sea.
Bai Tu Long Bay is recognized as the birthplace of the coal export seaport,
associated with Ke Bao coal mine, the earliest mining profession in Quang Ninh
mining area. It is an attractive real-life museum for the pleasure of learning
about the history of spiritual culture, the history of mining and Vietnamese
seaport craft villages.
Bai Tu Long Bay is a primeval forest with Ba Mun Nature Reserve above, and a
rare marine ecosystem below. Ba Mun Nature Reserve was approved by the Prime
Minister to be upgraded to Bai Tu Long National Park under Decision No. 85/2001/QD-TTg
dated June 1, 2001, with an area of 15,783 hectares, including 6,125 hectares
of forest and forest land and 9,650 hectares of sea surface, lagoons, and
mangrove tidal flats, with over 80 large and small islands. Bai Tu Long National
Park is a large area with a rich ecosystem, with 2,415 species of organisms,
including 1,195 species of forest flora and fauna and 1,220 species of marine
life.
The total number of wild animals and fish species recorded in the Vietnam Red
Book and the World Red Book is 108 species, typically sea turtles, green
turtles, and dolphins. The highlight of Bai Tu Long National Park is Ba Mun
Island with an area of about 1,800 hectares, considered a biological treasure
with diverse species of animals and plants in the forest with many large trees
belonging to the family of the four-legged wood such as ironwood, ironwood, sen,
tau... ancient tree trunks that 2-3 people can hug; and many wild animals,
underwater coral reef ecosystems with 106 species. Bai Tu Long National Park is
the largest conservation area in the Northeast. On May 19, 2017, Bai Tu Long
National Park was awarded the certificate of ASEAN Heritage Park, the first and
currently only ASEAN Heritage Park in Quang Ninh.
Bai Tu Long Bay was created by the second geological period with a unique
topography, like a giant island art painting. On the rocky islands, there are
famous caves such as Cap Ky Nhay, Cap Ky Gia, underground caves through Cai De
mountain; small isolated mountains with majestic shapes such as chopsticks
(spinning stone), chicken pair stone, crow stone, black stone, husband stone, on
stone, three-star stone...; La Vong culvert, Lo O lagoon, Cai De lagoon with an
area of over 10 hectares... On the water surface, there are floating
archipelagos of fertile land, long crystal sand beaches that sometimes appear
and sometimes disappear according to the tide level. The coastline is lined with
rows of casuarinas and native myrtle forests rustling in the south wind,
captivating visitors.
Recently, the world-famous travel website Lonely Planet suggested to
international visitors the top 10 tourist destinations to explore the culture,
cuisine and hidden gems of Vietnam; in which, Bai Tu Long Bay ranked 3rd in this
list. The New York Times (USA) once voted Bai Tu Long Bay as one of the
attractive tourist seaplane service destinations. Bai Tu Long Bay's tourism
potential is huge, but has not been properly exploited. In the year before the
Covid-19 pandemic, Bai Tu Long Bay's prosperous economy only welcomed about 1
million tourists.
Tourists from all over the world come to Bai Tu Long Bay, mainly to visit
spiritual tourist attractions, visit Cai Bau Pagoda, Cap Tien Temple and visit
and relax at traditional beaches in Co To Island and Van Hai archipelago. On the
water, boats mainly take passengers from the island commune, transport goods,
and cultivate aquatic products. Many islands have waves, as if listening to the
thousand-year-old echo of the sea; fine white crystal sand beaches, primeval
forests with birds calling in flocks, green arches casting shadows in the rising
tide, the scenery is as beautiful as a watercolor painting but deserted, with
few human footprints.
